Today was one of our most challenging STEM activities yet! The kids had to build a mini Mayflower that would float in our fish tank. Not only did it need to float. it had to hold 102 passengers- just like the real Mayflower! We had 4 out of 6 boats successful! These four boats will move on to round 2 after break! (We ran out of time today!)
This week, the class had to build a contraption that would keep an egg safe and unbroken when dropped. Lots of great ideas and engineering ideas!! (Don't worry- Mrs. W was right there as they stood on the desk!)
For STEM today, the class had to help out Farmer Paul. You see, for year Farmer Paul has been growing small pumpkins on his farm and selling them at the market. However, recently, bugs have been getting to his crop! The class had to come up with a solution... they had to create a structure that could support his pumpkin to keep them from the bugs. The class did great! Lots of different ideas!
Today at STEM the kids were faced with the challenge of creating a structure that could keep their families dry when raining. We had almost every group successful!! We talked a lot about the shape, designs, and different ideas that made their structures work!
Here are some pictures from our STEM projects! We try and incorporate STEM into our week every week!
We were fortunate enough to have an awesome visit from the wonderful people at USM Osher Map. The kids, after learning about different map aspects, had to go on a scavenger hunt to break the code. They got to look at tons of maps- some super old all the way up to now a days. They were engaged and did great! (Note to any teachers out there- this was a FREE visit and I would highly recommend it!)
Today we completed another task in our Engineering and Design STEM unit. After much planning, the kids had to create a paintbrush that could make a thick line, thin line, and polka dot. We had many successful designs!
I will try and stay up to date here so you can see all the fun we are having with our 26 day countdown!
